A Summer Surprise For Some Super Kids

Dr. Kevin Huffman is an award-winning educator and an esteemed member of the Springfield community. He is also a notorious train robber – but only on the weekends.

As principal at Robberson Community School, Dr. Huffman is known and admired for being a dedicated educator and administrator, leading a school that serves some of Springfield’s most at-risk students. With around 94% of its enrolled student body qualifying for free or reduced cost lunch, the school is tasked with educating children whose families are dealing with substantial economic disadvantages.

In 2012, Robberson was one of the first schools in Missouri to become a community school, transitioning to a more holistic approach to education that also helps to meet the basic needs of their students and their families. By partnering with community non-profits and other organizations, they are able to provide extensive wrap-around services including meals, before and after school programs and  health care services for the kids, along with parenting, financial planning and continuing education classes for their parents, helping to alleviate many of the obstacles to learning that impoverished students face.

This past Monday, 75 Robberson Community School students got the opportunity to visit Silver Dollar City, and as a special surprise, they got the see their beloved principal in his other role as one half of Silver Dollar City’s hilariously inept train robbing duo, the Bolin Brothers. Aboard the Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train the kids enjoyed the beautiful Ozarks scenery as they gently rolled along the track, but, true to form, soon the train slowed and the hold-up hijinks began. As you can imagine, the students were shocked and delighted as Alfie Bolin, portrayed by none other than Dr. Huffman, proceeded to rob the train in comic fashion, of course.

Kevin Huffman says that since he was a child he always wanted to work at Silver Dollar City and for the past six seasons he has been fulfilling that aspiration and entertaining guests as a weekend train robber. We’re proud to call Dr. Huffman a Citizen of Silver Dollar City, and glad that he is making his own dreams come true while working so hard to secure the futures of Robberson Community School’s young students.
